Unless you live under a rock or are anti-health food, you’ve probably come across avocado brownies. Sounds interesting, right? Since Logan is on the road and the Memorial Day weekend gives me a few extra hours in the kitchen, I decided I’d try my hand at this chocolatey-vegetable treat. I had a package of brownie mix that’s been tempting me and it needed to go. I thought I’d make it “healthier” by using avocado instead of oil.
After gathering my ingredients I start wondering if I really wanted to risk compromising a glorious pan of brownies by trying this “recipe” I had formulated in my head. See, I didn’t actually have a recipe. I didn’t want to search through Pinterest just to find out I didn’t have half the ingredients I needed anyway. All I knew was that you could replace oil with avocado; I wasn’t sure about the ratio so I figured I’d wing it. I’ve become really good at winging things.
While adding the items to my mixer I thought, “Lacey, do you have any clue what you’re doing?” Isn’t that life though? We get an amazing idea in our head and we want to try it. Sometimes we may not know what we’re doing. We may not even be educated in the subject matter. Think about how many inventions have come to light by such a manner. You have to gather your courage and attempt it. You’ll never know if you never try.
That being said, I gathered up my culinary courage, finished mixing my ingredients and taste tested my batter; not too shabby!
There is a point to my baking metaphor. You have to be willing to fail forward. You have to be willing to take the mess-ups and the hang-ups, learn from them and keep pressing on. Thank goodness my brownies turned out pretty darn good. I’m sure there are ways to make them better and I’ll look into what they are. I’m glad I attempted my so-called recipe and followed through despite the fact I could have easily been pouring my batter in the trash. Don’t ever be ashamed of failing forward.

1 package brownie mix
Water as needed
Follow the instructions on the brownie package. Substitute avocado in a 1:1 ratio for oil or butter. Thin out batter with water as needed. Bake according to package instructions.
